Known in the UK as an award winning, talented actor of stage and screen, unafraid to tackle challenging and controversial roles; Matthew came to international prominence as Mr Darcy in the 2005 film Pride and Prejudice. Matthew followed this iconic performance by playing Charlie, a sex offender in Secret Life for Channel 4 TV. He received a Best Actor award by the Royal Television Society and was nominated for a BAFTA, also as Best Actor for this controversial role. In 2008, Matthew continued his remarkable career with another RTS award nominated role for Best Actor, as Arthur Clennam in Dickens' Little Dorrit.

2009 has been another exciting year for Matthew. He stars alongside Helena Bonham Carter in Enid, a controversial drama for BBC4 focusing on the life of children's author, Enid Blyton. It is expected to be televised in Autumn in the UK. Matthew plays the Sheriff of Nottingham in Russell Crowe's Robin Hood, scheduled to be onscreen in May 2010. Criminal Justice II airs on BBC1 on October 5 for five consecutive nights. Matthew plays the role of a barrister and family man. The latter half of 2009 lead Matthew to travel to Hungary and Austria, where he has been filming Ken Follet's best seller which has been turned into a mini-series, The Pillars of the Earth. Matthew leads the mini-series as Prior Philip, a man driven to build a cathedral.
